He scared the Hell out of us almost every time!
His fist would come crashing down onto the table, the dishes, forks and knives would do a little dance, and we knew what was about to happen. From the quiet man in his seventies sitting beside me at the dinner table, came the explosion of grey matter that relayed to his mouth, the title for another great book or fantasy adventure.
The name Darling Terrace Publishing Co. was chosen because it best relates to the legacy of two people that lived in a row house on Parliament Street in Toronto, Canada. Above the front door of that house there is a marble plaque that reads “Darling Terrace 1877.” Theresia Winkler, a resident of Cabbagetown for 60-years, took two strangers into her home one day, and as a result, has allowed me to pursue an extraordinary adventure that I would have never anticipated.
The sign in the window read, “Room For Rent” and one day in the spring of 1977 the doorbell rang. I opened the door and there stood an elderly couple holding hands, surrounded by green garbage bags and trunks of various sizes. My mother came to the door and explained to the couple that the room was on the third floor and was afraid they could not manage the stairs. The gentleman pleaded with my mother, telling her they were dropped off at her door with no place to go.
Thomas Patrick Kelley, “THE FASTEST AUTHOR IN THE EAST,” and his wife Ethel Grace Kelley became family. We ate our meals together, and as alluded to earlier, would sometimes be hurled into Kelley’s fantasy world. Mr. Kelley often slammed his fist on the table and boldly announced book ideas such as, “By God I’ve Been Buried Alive!” which is just one that I remember of the many.
Mrs. Kelley became ill and hospitalized in the later part of 1981. My mother would not allow them to be separated, so Mr. Kelley was accommodated to live alongside his ailing wife. Mrs. Kelley passed February 1, 1982 and without any medical reasoning known to doctors, Mr. Kelley passed thirteen days later on Valentines Day. The doctors told us they were convinced Mr. Kelley died from a broken heart.

My mother, Theresia Winkler passed February 21, 2016, after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Because of her kindness in allowing Mr. and Mrs. Kelley to live out the remainder of their lives in a safe and caring home, Mr. Kelley passed his literary works to her. I am excited to announce that they will be republished for us to enjoy once more, exclusively by Darling Terrace Publishing Co. |
